The Duke City

I'm stepping up to answer the household question of the week: Why is Albuquerque called The Duke City?

The answer is simple, my friends. Albuquerque was named after Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, Duke of Alburquerque, viceroy of New Spain.

Note that Alburquerque is not a typo. There was originally another r in Albuquerque which was dropped in the 19th century.

Very interesting Dave! I think the extra "r" adds some spunk...I may adopt it into my pronunciation.

Wikepedia also discusses the mayor's plan to brand Albuquerque as having the official nickname of "The Q". Apparently going so far as hiring a PR firm to handle the whole deal.

Kinda sounds like the 'Cuse, but its the Q. Yo.
